Lee Ann Womack Remembers Her First Time

|

Lee Ann Womack has been a country hit-making machine since the release of her self-titled debut album in March 1997. We asked the songbird where she was all those years ago, when she heard the album's first single on the radio for the first time.

"I had dreamed for years of working alongside my country music heroes. My first single was so country and featured prominent harmony vocals that I had Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White come in and sing. The first notes I heard myself sing on the radio were accompanied by their voices, and it meant the world to me.

"The song was called 'Never Again, Again' and was written by a friend of mine from back home. I was coming around a bend of I-65 in Nashville and heard the guy from the radio station talking about "this new artist that was traditional country," and I just knew he was about to play my record. So I turned it up and waited for the acapella intro. It was fitting that I was in the car by myself, as I've always enjoyed the very personal moments of accomplishment most. I think it's important to occasionally reflect on what I've done and think, 'You've done pretty well, girl!'"
